The gold leaf eventually disintegrated completely. It isn't all actual gold. It depends on what you get. It is actually like gold-colored brass, as opposed to "white-colored" brass, etc. But it isn't gold. I think it's because the gold leaf from the craft store isn't pure enough gold, probably more copper, so it oxidizes in base.
